This article details instructions on how to add and edit field types within a module.
To learn more about Custom Field Types, check out the Custom Field Data Dictionary user guide.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. After logging into your Lighthouse instance and either creating a new module or locating the one you wish to edit fields in, navigate across to fields tab to add in your form structure.
2. To add a new field click on the “+” icon in the field bar.
![]()
3. Once you have selected the add button a prompt will appear to edit your new field section.

4. Select the name of the field and its visibility.
*Expanded means that everything within the field will be displayed when you are submitting the form. Scroll down to understand Hidden Fields, Collapsed and Menu Only.
Hidden Fields
Hidden fields will not appear on the front end of the form for users unless changed in the Section Permissions. Under Section Permissions you are able to select specific groups/users to view sections of a form that would otherwise be hidden.

This is how the hidden field will appear to users who have access to view the section.

Collapsed Fields
Collapsed fields will be hidden unlike expanded field types until you select the arrow button on the right side of the field. This is good option if a form has a lot of fields in it.
Menu Only Fields
Menu Only fields will only be accessible by clicking on “Actions” then selecting the field type name that you have selected as being menu only.
The field will automatically be made active. Later, you can chose to make a field inactive. *Please note the fields will not be made inactive if there is active data linked to the field sections.
5. To continue, click save.
6. Once the field is created, to add content, select the arrow next to the edit icon and select the “+” next to label.

7. The edit field prompt will appear for you to input your field type information.
- Select the type – yes/no, short text, single selection etc.
- Label is the name of the label seen in the editing and will not be seen on final form unless caption is left empty. (e.g., Name)
- Caption will be seen on the final form (e.g., What is your name?)
- Mandatory means whether of not the field is required to be answered. If yes they will have to answer
- Click save.
Conditional Fields
A conditional field will appear in response to a precondition question (Already made field). To add a conditional field, create a new field (as informed above) and input the information you would like the user to answer/submit.
1. Fill in the information and select the response type.
2. After selecting the response type, there will be a section called “conditional“. Click on the box to active it, and a prerequisite question drop down will appear where you will select the question you would like the conditional field to appear for.
3. In the text box, write in the value that the conditional field will appear for:
*For example: If the prerequisite question is “Have you ever used lighthouse? Yes/No” and you want the conditional field to ask “When did you first use Lighthouse?” to appear when the user selects “Yes”. “Yes” would be the value for the conditional field.*
4. Click save.
Expanding All Sections In Settings
1. To expand all sections there are two options.
- First option is to click on the arrow on the left hand side of the section. This will expand all items within the section.
- Second option is to click on “Actions” and “Expand All Sections”. This will expand all sections within the fields.
